Curriculum

Your Academic Journey

The Hebrew Old Testament program is divided into 2 parts. The program is designed to take you from a beginner level to being able to read and translate the biblical text. The courses include video classes, reading materials, exams, and translation projects. Below you will find the list of the courses we offer in the program (course offer may vary).

Part 1

Fundamentals (Units 1-9)

Introduction, Rationale, & Alphabet Part 1
The inaugural step into biblical languages. This course establishes the theological and historical importance of learning biblical Hebrew, followed by a meticulous introduction to the consonants and basic phonetics of the ancient Semitic alphabet.
Hebrew Alphabet Part 2
Solidifies the foundational recognition of the Hebrew script. This continuation ensures mastery over cursive forms, final letters (sofit), and complex vocalization marks, enabling flawless reading aloud before advancing into vocabulary and grammar.
History, Vowels, & Tools
Provides a cultural and linguistic preamble to biblical Hebrew. Students explore the fascinating history of the Semitic languages, the development of the Masoretic vowel system, and receive an introduction to digital tools that aid translation.
Hebrew Texts
An applied translation course where students leave the grammar books behind and dive directly into translating significant portions of the Old Testament. Emphasis is on syntax flow, literary style analysis, and uncovering the deep theological layers present only in the original language.
Hebrew Grammar Part 1
The gateway to the original language of the Old Testament. Students will master the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph-Bet), vocalization systems (Niqqud), and basic vocabulary, taking the first critical steps toward reading the Torah in its original tongue.
Hebrew Grammar Part 2
Advances the student from basic vocabulary into essential Hebrew grammar. Topics cover definite articles, prepositions, adjectives, and the introduction of the Qal perfect verb, allowing students to begin constructing and translating rudimentary biblical sentences.
Hebrew Grammar Part 3
An intermediate study of Hebrew linguistics, introducing the derived stems and advanced verb conjugations. This vital progression unlocks the nuance behind specific biblical narratives, adding depth to the interpretation of the original text.
Hebrew Grammar Part 3.1
A specialized modular segment zeroing in on the unique syntactical behaviors of irregular nouns and introductory verbal stems. Mastery of this module ensures students don't fall behind as they transition into translating multi-verse Old Testament narratives.
Hebrew Grammar Part 3.2
Focuses intensely on weak verbs and complex noun paradigms in biblical Hebrew. Through rigorous memorization and translation exercises, students will overcome the most challenging linguistic hurdles, smoothing their transition into fluent Old Testament translation.
Part 2

Application (Units 10-18)

Hebrew Grammar Part 4
Continues the progression into advanced Hebrew syntax. This segment focuses heavily on the construct state, pronominal suffixes attached to verbs, and complex sentence clauses, drastically elevating the student's ability to read extended canonical passages.
Hebrew Grammar Part 5
Tackles the intricate nuances of Hebrew cohortatives, jussives, and imperatives. Focus is placed heavily on reading extensive portions of historical narratives in the Old Testament, polishing the student's translational fluency and speed.
Hebrew Grammar Part 6
The culminating phase of foundational Hebrew linguistics. This section bridges complex syntactical structures and advanced morphology, requiring students to translate lengthy passages from the Old Testament with minimal reliance on external tools, ensuring full linguistic independence and exegetical precision.
Hebrew Lexical Studies
An exploration of semantics and word usage within the Hebrew Old Testament. By studying root origins, cognate languages, and contextual occurrences, students will master the art of determining precise word meanings in complex prophetic and poetic literature.
Word Study
Provides a comprehensive methodology for conducting accurate biblical word studies. Students will be trained to avoid anachronisms and root fallacies, relying instead on contextual analysis to unpack the theological weight of specific biblical terms.
Commentaries
Guides students in the sophisticated use of biblical commentaries. Rather than relying on them as primary sources, this course teaches how to critically evaluate differing scholarly perspectives and synthesize historical-critical data into sound theological conclusions.
Genre and Exegesis
Trains students to recognize and interpret the rich variety of biblical literature, including narrative, poetry, prophecy, and apocalyptic writings. By applying tailored hermeneutical principles to specific genres, students avoid common interpretive errors and deliver text-accurate sermon reflections.
Textual Criticism and Versions
Introduces the science and art of textual criticism, analyzing ancient manuscripts and the history of biblical transmission. Students learn to navigate variant readings, understand the formation of modern translations, and confidently defend the reliability of the scriptural text.
Hebrew in Ministry
Bridges the gap between academic linguistic study and practical pastoral work. Pastors will learn how to responsibly integrate Hebrew word studies, cultural idioms, and original syntax into their weekly sermon preparation to deliver richer, more accurate biblical insights to their congregations.
